In the early twentieth Century, David Whitney Jr., the richest man in Detroit, who had made a fortune in the lumber industry, began the construction of his own building.
Doing so he hired Chicago architect Daniel Burnham who had previously built the famous Flat Iron Building in New York.
Although abandoned, the building remains partially powered.
