Built in 1915 in the Chicago School style, a movement which was at the origin of skyscraper architecture in the United States, led among others by Louis Sullivan.
The movement gave priority to a functionalism non-devoid of decorative elements, and special attention was paid to volume lighting:
the Farwell is built around a shaft of light going through seven of its eight levels.
